Students created landform cookie islands as their final assessment project on Friday. What a yummy way to create mountain ranges, hills, lakes and other forms studied!

"The Great Farmington Fire of 1886"Mallett School's second grade took a two hour tour tracing the route of "The Great Farmington Fire of 1886" last week. Students compared present sites with photographs from the past to see the differences in the town and to help visualize the devastation. Students concluded the tour with a stop by the North Church where they saw poster sized photographs displayed by Farmington's Historical Society.
On Monday Brody brought his fly tying desk into share with us. He made it with his Grandpa and his Dad. It has many places for him to keep everything he needs. He talked for a long time and told us about the hooks and the tools he uses. Brody said that his vise was his most important tool. He showed us the deer and bear fur he had as well as turkey feathers. Brody is going to practice with his Dad and then tie a fly under the Ladibug document camera so we can all watch on the board. It was fun to learn more about Brody!
What a fun time we had yesterday "Eating the Earth!" We have been learning about the layers of the Earth in our Science class. Each of us told Mrs. Stevens what the layers of the Earth were and a fact about one of them. Then we got to eat! She took a cake with creme in the middle and chocolate on the outside and put an M and M in the middle. The M and M was for the solid inner core, the creme was the outer core, the cake part was the mantle and the thin chocolate outside was like the thin crust we live on. The Earth tastes yummy!!
Crystal have grown a lot on the sides of the tube.
More grew during school today. The solution is almost gone. This afternoon we added food coloring. Today we set up a new experiment. You can see that it is soaking up the sides of the toilet paper tube.
We mixed a solution of salt, bluing, water and ammonia in a bowl. We mixed it up. Tomorrow we will see what happened and let you know! Click here to see a video of what will happen! Model, model, practice, practice, discuss and then repeat. That seems to sum up last week. Things will be very similar this week as well. The first few weeks of school is the time to review and establish the practices that the classroom will operate under this year.
We are getting to know one another and using activities to learn the classroom expectations. In Reading students are practicing "Read to Self." We have agreed on a list of expectations and are working to build our stamina. This means how long the class, as a whole, can independently carry these out. We surpassed our goal of 7 minutes today and went to 8 minutes! WhooHoo!! Tomorrow we'll set a new goal. It's a slow process to build up independent behavior but we're on our way. Our class grew mystery crystals. We put foil, a fake shark, colored rocks and a chemical solution with water in a plastic tank and crystals grew overnight. We took pictures with a Proscope computer microscope.
A variety of web sites and Internet tools will be used in the classroom this year. Your consent, on the permission form, allows your child to participate and supports communication of their learning with family members.
It's that time again! I've been getting the classroom ready and attending all the beginning of school meetings. Getting the classroom ready has been more of a challenge this year. My youngest daughter chose to get married last weekend so August was a month of increasing wedding craziness. Additionally, commercial air conditioning units are being installed in the classrooms. Mine is still in a box in the middle of the classroom and wires are laying on the floor. That makes setting up the classroom difficult. Hopefully all will be done before next Tuesday!
